What is a qualified electronic signature?
It's a signature backed by a qualified electronic certificate, issued by a provider accredited before Panama's National Directorate of Electronic Signature at the Public Registry. The law equates it to a handwritten signature.
Do I need the certificate if I already use the Zoho Books + The Factory HKA connector?
Yes. The connector automates the signature on every electronic invoice, but it needs a valid qualified electronic certificate to sign with. By also managing the certificate, we activate both pieces together instead of you coordinating two separate vendors.
Does a qualified electronic signature have the same value as my handwritten signature?
Yes. Unlike a simple electronic signature, which requires evidence to be accepted in court, a qualified signature is presumed valid from the start, with the same legal force as a handwritten signature.
What's the difference between a qualified signature and a simple signature?
A simple signature is a technical method that identifies the signer, but if it reaches a court, you have to prove the method was reliable. A qualified signature, backed by an accredited certificate, is accepted as valid without that proof.
Is a scanned signature an electronic signature?
No. Panamanian law treats it as a "digitized signature": it's just an image of your handwritten signature, easy to copy and without the legal backing of an electronic signature.
